01.25: Zig Zags mark record release at The Factory

If you haven't made weekend plans yet, and would like to spend your Saturday evening screaming at the top of your lungs, head to The Factory downtown and check out Zig Zags' record release show. The band put out their LA to Pedro EP last month, but they'll mark it with a performance on a bill with fellow acts The Side Eyes, Nice, and Urns & Argyles. The new EP is a split 7" with Mike Watt and The Secondmen, which includes Zig Zags' take on The Minutemen's "Political Nightmare" along with a new original called "Running Out Of Red". Get ready to spend your weekend with Zig Zags; take a listen to "Running Out Of Red" below. - Will Sisskind

Stream: Zig Zags, "Brainded Warrior"

Our 2012 Year End Poll winners and off-the-wall garbage punk rockers, Zig Zags are at it again. Their rumored Ty Segall-produced album has become an official announcement. Due out June 3 on In The Red Records, the long-awaited debut full length has us bursting with anticipation. "Brainded Warrior" is the first single they've shared and it fully lives up to the hype. The trio creates a parallel world where their music is the soundtrack to the mythic shenanigans of glammed-out mutant warriors. While referencing 80s punk and metal, they manage to build something futuristic; a shredded wasteland that, through their lens, becomes a playground for tongue-in-cheek mischief. Zig Zags play two nights at The Church on York with Thee Oh Sees on May 28 and 29. - Jacqueline Caruso

Zig Zags play Jam in the Van Live Taping at The Bootleg 1/25

No need to rub the sleep from your eyes, you read that right. Tomorrow morning, Saturday January 25, Jam in the Van will present a live taping session at the Bootleg. It's apparently Free and open to the public. It's as good a reason as any to work those day drinking muscles just in time to build up your stamina for SXSW and the rest of the festival season. Taping kicks off at 11am with The Silent Comedy, followed by performances from Great White Buffalo, Roses, Zig Zags, and Tara Fox. Our 2013 Emerging Band of the Year, Zig Zags, play at 3:30pm, which will surely give you enough time to shake off Friday night's regrets. The band has been releasing singles, 7"s, covers (with Iggy Pop no less), cassettes, and re-issues over the past two years, but 2014 has come, and the wait for their full length release is anticipated to be over. Rumors, confirmed in interviews and from photos on their facebook page, of a Ty Segall-engineered album have been buzzing. From the looks of it, the as-yet un-named LP, set for release sometime in the spring, seem more real than ever before. Especially since they've been dubbed "One to Watch in 2014" by both LA Weekly and CMJ. Check out this live video of a brand new song, "Voice of the Paranoid," recorded at Converse Rubber Tracks Studio to get a taste of what you're in for. - Jacqueline Caruso
