Sound Select Portland: Big Freedia, Magic Mouth, Thanks

The first Tuesday of each month has never been more exciting in Portland, thanks to Red Bull's new concert series Sound Select Presents: Portland. Each month, the concerts are curated by different local music aficionados, and showcase one national headlining act and two local up and comers. Past headliners of the series include Maps and Atlases, Portugal. The Man and Helio Sequence. This month's showcase at Mississippi Studios features New Orleans' Big Freedia, the undisputed Queen of bounce, supported by Magic Mouth and Thanks.

Main support of the evening, Magic Mouth are a hard hitting four piece that plays soulful funk music in the most rock and roll way possible. With an enthusiastic front man whose vocal range is off the musical map, the group delivers a raw and simple but huge sound. Thanks offer a soulful take on psychedelic rock. The erie, reverb soaked guitar hooks and thundering drum and bass lines are beautifully rounded out by lead singer Jimi Hendrix’s piercing vocal ability. Her jazzy voice reminisces the English soul scene (Amy Winehouse, Wayne Allen, ect.) making Thanks a truly exciting live band.

All this local music greatness leads up to one of the best rap acts in the country. Big Freedia has starred on Ru Paul’s Drag Race, and made herself famous this past summer by prompting a twerking feat that made the Guiness’ Book of World Records. Freedia's unique musical styling 'bounce,' is like trap but more twerktastic and bouncy.

April 1, the show starts at 9pm and costs $3 if you RSVP here in advance, or $15 at the door. - Colin Hudson

Portland Music's Excellent Adventure: Treefort Music Fest

If you're one of the lucky ones who is making it out to Treefort Music Fest in Boise, Idaho this weekend, you're probably losing your mind right now. And with good reason, as your life is likely to change forever. To make things easier for you, we've dug through this year's lineup to highlight the overwhelming amount of Portland bands whose performances this weekend demand your presence. Persuasion is done best quickly and carefully. Pay close attention.

Two-piece Nurses are constantly reinventing your definition of experimental pop. The Shivas toss your body and mind back into a time where bopping superseded twerking. The woodsy and folksy Great Wilderness are fronted by subtly demanding vocals. And And And is playful but not too playful but really fun to let loose to while actually still being serious. AU is destined to cover your body with goosebumps. Ernest Hip Hatchet coats simplistic guitar melodies with authentic lyricism. Animal Eyes never let their energy down. Sallie Ford is embarking on her own adventure, so it wouldn't be in your best interests to miss the beginning of something beautiful. Sama Dams are the noteworthy avant garde three-piece in the scene. Tiburones echo all that make you actually feel like a human being, pulling at your heart strings and beyond. Genders could easily fall into your definition as a comforting band, while at the same time pushing you to get yourself into unlikely situations. Like A Villain AKA Holland Andrews will leave you never feeling the same. Hustle and Drone widen your eyes and move your body in ways you'd probably just do alone in the privacy of an empty space. Sun Angle are famously furious, wild and will make you laugh whether you're into that sort of thing or not. Summer Cannibals match that amount of energy, bringing forth their youthful disposition. Eternal Tapestry pull from Eastern influences and force vivid imagery with or without actual projections. Wooden Indian Burial Ground aggressively shakes your world close to oblivion. Aan will bring you back and Magic Mouth will allow you to gently waltz back into the real world.

This year's festival will be one to remember. - Colette Pomerleau

Magic Mouth and Minden at White Owl Social Club 1.24

If two Portland bands were born to play shows together, it would be these two. And not because they sound like twin lineups, rather their matching energy and pazazz that pair alongside both bands’ strong, soulful undertones that can give any righteous hipster something to smile about. Minden will start off the night as their soft keyboard, smooth rhythm section, and harmonious back and forth vocals come together with an intriguing complexity that always ends on the right note. Following this, is the root driven rock stars, Magic Mouth. They play funk music with punk attitude and screeching soul-filled vocals with an ability to speak to a crowd through their high energy, fun-filled songs. Both Magic Mouth and Minden are set to have huge years in 2014 plus they both start with “m” so that’s kinda rad too. - Colin Hudson

Magic Mouth EP Release at Tonic Lounge 9.20

Magic Mouth pulled out all the stops for their latest EP, Devil May Care. This funky, high energy release showcases a melding of soul, rock and r&b refined by clean production and precise tones. The musicianship is mature without being overbearing, the songs complex without losing pop appeal and the hooks as addicting as the vocal melodies are compelling. “Mother Lode” provides a break from the dance party, the fluid bass line grounding an emotive vocal melody and sparse guitar leads. The closing track, “Speak Softly After Dark (For Nina)” has the kind of driving, kinetic rhythm that could move any audience; the fact that it’s supported by some of the most soulful vocals to come out of Portland in recent years is the icing on the cake. Magic Mouth will be celebrating the release of Devil May Care this Friday night at Tonic Lounge with Double Duchess, Glitterbang and DJ Beyondadoubt, the show starts at 9 pm. - Benjamin Toledo

Magic Mouth and Onuinu at Alberta Rose Theater 8.23

Flight 64 Printmaking Studio has put together a show that is sure to be one of the highlights of the summer, featuring Magic Mouth and Onuinu. After an energetic performance at PDX Pop Now!, Magic Mouth has been taking the Portland music scene by storm. Their sound is composed of Motown and a little bit of hip hop, but is grounded in raw rock and roll. They thrive with an unspeakable amount of band chemistry that lasts from the first note to the last. Onuinu has made a name for himself in the past few years as a producer and now has a backing band to complete the music. The songs have a vibe similar to chillwave, but dive in and out of smooth rock and always often land in an a futuristic soul groove that will make you dance. Head to Alberta Rose Theater this Friday to do just that. - Colin Hudson
