When local artists and businesses throughout a music scene unite as a community in celebration and support of each other, good things are the result. Philly Music Fest serves as an opportune event. What began yesterday at Johnny Brenda’s with Pissed Jeans and Soul Glo continues for the next two days at World Cafe Live. Tonight, the elegant hypnotically galvanizing pop of Vita and the Woolf, the endless boogie of Low Cut Connie, the raw and ragged, sweat-saturated, surf-infused, garage rock of The Whips, and the earnest, scene-transporting, songwriting force of Waxahatchee are among those that shape its sonic surroundings. And tomorrow, Palm cultivates an experimental push-pull, hovering between tranquil waves and frenetic, unconventional changes in direction. The melodic, eruptive, dynamic swings of The Districts, the tenacious, cosmic-rocking, riff-combusting charge of Ruby the Hatchet, and the soothing, introspective vulnerability of powerpop trio Hurry are also slated for Saturday. Low Cut Connie w/St. James & The Apostles and Shark Tape at Underground Arts Aug. 3

Rockabilly soul rebels Low Cut Connie have a triumphant return from tour to play a jam-packed lineup at Underground Arts tonight. And they’ll be fully prepared to showcase why their latest album Call Me Sylvia has been earning them so much buzz. Low Cut Connie will be joined by the cousins of St. James & The Apostles who will be playing their last Philly show as a power trio before they test out the waters performing with an extended lineup that features Ang Bocca of Ang & the Damn Band and Jeff White of Arctic Splash at Johnny Brenda’s on August 17. Low Cut Connie Gots Nothing to Hide at JB’s Nov.9

Low Cut Connie occupies the stage tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. With the recent release of their sophomore album, Call Me Sylvia, the quartet have developed a reputation for they’re back to basics boogie style rock ‘n’ roll. The sound does incorporate various essentials of the classic rock/Chicago-style blues vibe. However, the most important aspect may be the gritty up close and personal nothing-to-hide mentality, which the group implores. Pianist/vocalist, Adam Weiner (formerly known as Ladyfingers), can lead an up-tempo New Orleans-style boogie track, and then flip the script to country-folk saloon-style blues and everything in between. Along with Birmingham, England transplant, Dan Finnemore, smashing the skins, this band isn’t retrograde; it’s fundamentally pure taking a true heart and soul approach. Whether it’s the smooth down-home boogie of the keys, the chunky garage-style guitar riffs, or the vocals which have that worn deep-down-in-the-chest blues/soul vibe, these songs have that relatable aggressively fun edge - pissed off yet playful. Adam & Dave’s Bloodline will also be opening the evening playing music with a folksy, stripped-down garage aesthetic that maximizes the tried-and-true combinations of swift painted-stroked guitar uniting them with an unassuming rhythm section capable of pushing into high gear at any moment. The pair of bands may jog your musical memory. But, the appeal doesn’t lie in turning back the clock; rather, in playing music that captures raw unfiltered emotion in its prime state.
